Tomorrow, December 11, we are closing the Center in order to attend the memorial service of our dear friend, John Bonvillian. John was a dedicated supporter, member, volunteer, donor, and visitor. He always had a sense of humor and a smile. He encouraged people to do their best, and he rallied the APO Service Fraternity at UVA to make their significant contributions throughout the community, and to us. He was willing to learn watercoloring in a journaling workshop, and approached new activities with his jovial enthusiasm. He taught us about George Drouillard, who was one of his consuming interests. In John’s honor, we are establishing an annual essay competition related to Drouillard, which we will be announcing soon. John brought his nephew to the Center to help renovate the Red Pirogue, our replica of one of the three boats the Corps took up the Missouri. We will remember him aboard the boat, chatting and babysitting (he had his nephew’s child with him, as I recall…). We miss him very much. We look forward to gathering with his friends and family.
