The Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center is having its public opening on May 14, 2016, announcing its regular public hours beginning on that day. Entry will be free all day, 10-4, with inside and outside tours. From 2-3 there will be dedications of the Meriwether Lewis Home Front Chapter Library, including an event honoring the DeForest Family’s gifts of artwork and books.

We’ve set our winter calendar! Here are some of our Saturday public open times coming up…the hours are all 10 to 2.
January 30
We’re having a scavenger hunt of items related to the Lewis & Clark Expedition! Teams encouraged. We will also be making wooden animal medallions (see our Facebook page for examples).
February 13
President’s Day and Valentine’s Day activities
February 20
We are hoping to participate in Kid*Vention at the Key Recreation Center–details to follow
March 12
Audio Tour Hikes
The public will be invited to give input on the first “draft” of our audio tour. You’ll listen to the tour as you walk inside our building and outside on the trails.
March 26
UVA volunteers will be working on site.
April 9
Model Boat Day
We will be making model wooden and paper boats, and trying them out on the river.
May 14

These are the dates for public events only, not group reservations or private events!
Saturday, October 31, 2015, 10 AM to 1 PM, Halloween Mask Making: Come make two paper masks: one inspired by animals that Lewis & Clark met on their journeys, and the other by plants and other natural objects. Hike around the Center to find leaves, feathers, and stones to photocopy and paint, and then to turn into masks. $7
Saturday, November 21, 2015, 10 AM to 2 PM, Rocks, Cones, and Berries: Activity #1: Learn about the natural history of holiday plants used for ornaments, such as holly, pine cones, and mistletoe in our special exhibit. Activity #2: Make ornaments out of holiday plants: perfect for gifts. Activity #3: Go on a rock hunt, and then make a beautiful watercolor of the rocks for you to take home. Inspired by the artwork of “A Rock is Lively,” by Sylvia Long. $7
Saturday, December 12, 2015, 10 AM to 2 PM, Holiday Giftmaking: Wooden Medallions and Miniature Paintings: Children will make wooden medallions and miniature paintings on wood that they can give as holiday gifts. $7

Stop by the Center to learn how to make paper masks for Halloween! We’re using photocopier prints and paint to make the leaf collage masks, and oil pastels to make animals masks. Our trails and Keelboat are also decorated with some spooky scenes to inspire you to write your own ghost story… $7
