Sister Cities Journaling Workshops

February 4, 2018 | Posted in Uncategorized | By

Through a grant from the Sister Cities Commission, the Center is offering free workshops for Charlottesville and Albemarle residents who have visited our Sister Cities: Winneba, Ghana; Poggio a Caiano, Italy; Pleven, Bulgaria; and Besancon, France. Please email lewisandclark@lewisandclarkvirginia.org to reserve your spot. Please let us know which Sister City or cities you have visited. Inspired by the journals of Lewis and Clark, which include both writing and drawing, the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center will be teaching how to journal using ink, pencil, and watercolors. Beginners are welcome. The end results will be journal pages on fine art paper that can be exhibited and shared. The pages will be shared digitally with the Sister Cities, and there will also be a public exhibition in Charlottesville at the Center. After exhibition, the pages will be returned to the participants.Though designed for adults, children who have been to the Sister Cities are welcome to register, too. The registration is first come, first reserved. There are appoximately 20 seats per workshop. You have a choice between two dates: March 4, from 10:30 and 1:30, and March 11, from 1 to 4:40. The schedule includes a slide show demonstrating examples of journals; a writing session, when participants write down their favorite experiences; and a final segment on using watercolors. The participants are asked to bring photographs of their trips for inspiration and also to share with their fellow participants.

Expanded Hours!

January 12, 2018 | Posted in Uncategorized | By

We’re now open to the public Tuesday through Thursday, 1 to 5 PM (last entry an hour before closing)! This is in addition to our normal Friday and Saturday hours, 10 to 4 (also last ticket sold an hour before closing).

We’re featuring projects for explorers, including making a mini-museum from some objects found on a hike, painting and collaging texture boards out of natural and manmade materials, and crafting art objects and stories based on what you find in nature. We’re leading short hikes that get us outside without making us too cold.

The activities are based on our book of the month…
