City of Charlottesville RFI

February 10, 2021 | Posted in Uncategorized | By

People have been calling and emailing us about the City’s RFI about the Lewis, Clark, and Sacajawea statue. Though we were not alerted in advance about this RFI, we have been working on this issue for a long time with many partners, including the City. We have been writing grants and examining avenues and projects, in particular projects that would offer indigenous leadership while keeping the statue within Charlottesville, examining its place within history and art history, and informing each visitor so that they can discover their own viewpoint. We will be in touch again as this community process proceeds. Feel free to write us with your interest at lewisandclark@lewisandclarkexploratorycenter.org Depending on the number of emails, we may not be able to write you individually, but we will respond to the issues raised. Thank you for your interest!

Virtual and On Site Programs Available

We’re offering both virtual and on site programs for the winter, with tickets available through our Eventbrite landing page
https://lewisandclarkexploratorycenter.eventbrite.com where you can go to check out what’s on offer through January, with detailed descriptions.

Our on-site program, “Introduction to Nature Journaling and a Hike,” allows families or a group or learning pod to sign up exclusively for a socially-distanced outside program. We teach the basics of keeping a journal while also telling the story of the Lewis and Clark journals and Thomas Jefferson’s goals for documenting the Expedition.

Our online program is called “Monuments: The Lewis, Clark, and Sacajawea Statue in Charlottesville, Virginia,’ which is an interactive, photographic webinar examining the Charles Keck statue, “Their First View of the Pacific.” Participants are prompted to answer questions by writing notes and then to form their own opinions about the controversial statue. Ultimately they are asked to decide what they think should be done with the statue, which is slated to be moved from its current location.

We will be having our annual Portable Feast fundraiser this year (its fourth), with the selection of Thursday, October 22, or Friday, October 23. We invite you to join us in a scaled down, physically-distanced version inspired by the taverns of yore. You will be able to have a large table of your own for your own group of two or more. People coming by themselves will be able to have a smaller table within a group of others, safely spaced.

Tickets will be available soon! Be on the look-out for new posts!
